Life on the Desert Edge.

Seven Thousand Years of Settlement in the Northern Dongola Reach of the Nile, Sudan

This is the final report on the Society's survey in the Northern Dongola Reach of the Nile between 1993 and 1997. Working on the east bank of the river to the edge of the desert plateau, over 450 sites were discovered, many arranged along palaeochannels of the Nile. The project was able to chart the development of settlement and the reaction of the population to the onset of desertification and the drying up of the palaeochannels.
